Sensory corpuscles: what are free nerve endings?
Free nerve ending- is an unspecialized, afferent nerve ending, meaning it brings information from the body’s periphery towards the brain. They function as cutaneous receptors to detect pain.
What are the two sensory fibers of the free nerve ending? the two sensory fibers of the free nerve ending are the C fibers and the A δ fibers.
Describe the C fibers? The C fibers are slow unmylinated fibers.
Describe the A δ fibers? The A δ fibers are fast mylinated fibers.
Where is the free nerve endings located? The free nerve endings are located on skin epidermis and some viscera.
What does a free nerve ending sense? The free nerve endings sense pain and temperature.
Describe the fibers of Meissner’s corpuscles [also known as tactile corpuscles]? the fibers of Meissner’s corpuscles [also known as tactile corpuscles] are large mylinated fibers and they’re known to adapt quickly.
What is the location of Meissner’s corpuscles? The location of Meissner’s corpuscles is at glabrous which means hairless skin.
What does the Meissner’s corpuscles sense? The Meissner’s corpuscles sense dynamic and fine to light touch as well as position sense.
Describe the fibers of Pacinian corpuscle. The fibers of Pacinian corpuscle are large mylinated fibers.
Where are the Pacinian corpuscles located? The Pacinian corpuscles are located deep in the skin layers, also located in the ligaments and joints.
What does the Pacinian corpuscle sense? The Pacinian corpuscles sense vibration and pressure.
Describe the fibers of Merkel’s disks. The fibers of Merkel’s disks are large mylinated fibers that adapt slowly.
Where are the Merkel’s disks located? Merkel’s disks are located in the hair follicles.
What do the Merkel’s disks sense? The Merkel’s disks sense pressure, deep static touch such as sharp objects and edges and position senses.
